FS-CATARACT SURGERY

A cataract is the natural clouding of the lens in the eye.

Most frequently it is due to age-related changes but this can be brought on at an earlier age due to trauma or other medical conditions such as diabetes. It may also be genetic occurring at a younger age. It is estimated that 30% of people aged over 65yrs have a visually disabling cataract.

It causes blurred vision, glare, difficulty with reading and can be easily recified with cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure and involves removing the human lens and replacing it with a man-made intraocular lens (IOL).

In femto-second cataract surgery, the laser makes precise corneal incisions, a perfectly round and centered opening (capsulorrhexis) in the lens and fragments the cataractous lens. The lens fragments are removed easily with less energy required. Ths allows for perfect IOL centration which is essential with modern premium lens implants which require the lens to sit in the centre of the eye / capsular bag in order to optics to work correctly. Lens technology is constantly evolving and a thorough discussion of all the different lens options, their pros and cons will be had with Mr Maycock to determine which is the most appropriate lens for your lifestyle and needs.

Frequently asked questions

Anyone with a cataract. Symptoms include blurred vision, reduced colours /  contrast sensitivity,, photophobia (sensitivity to light), glare and difficulty seeing at night.

Cataract surgery using the femtosecond laser is extremely safe. However, as with all types of surgery, there is asmall associated risk. Potential complications include posterior capsule rupture (National PCR rate is 1 in 100 whereas my rate is 1 in 725), under or over correction, swelling or tears in the retina, infection (National rate 0.14% my infection rate is 0.018%) and loss of vision.

It is a painless procedure: topical anaesthetic eye drops ensure the eye is fully numb. Patients also have the option of regional local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic. This will be discussed at your consultation.

Most patients find their vision has significantly improved within 24 hours of the procedure. The pupils may appear to be dilated for up to 48 hours as this is how long it takes for the eye drops we use for surgery to wear off. You should wait until the day after surgery to drive, and sunglasses may need to be worn for the first 24 hours if you’re experiencing sensitivity to light.
