REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is the preferred vision correction treatment for patients over the age of 50yrs old.

At this age, patients have often lost the ability to read without glasses and RLE surgery with a bespoke, premium lens implant allows the possibility of spectacle independence.

The new lens can have mono-focal / enhanced monofocal, multifocal or EDOF (Extended Depth Of Focus) optics. A thorough clinical assessment and discussion during your initial consultation will establish the type of lens and refractive outcome that will be the best suited to your requirements. As part of the RLE package, we offer the option of corneal laser enhancement to fine tune the precise refractive outcome in each eye.

Frequently asked questions

RLE is most suitable for patients over 50yrs old, but it may be appropriate for younger patients in certain circumstances.

A detailed discussion of RLE vs LASIK vs ICL (including the pros and cons for each including which is the most appropriate for you) will take place during your clinic consultation.

RLE and cataract surgery have a similar risk and complications profile. These will be discusse in detail at your clinic appointments.

It is a painless procedure that takes 10-20 minutes. Some mild discomfort and irritation may be felt in the few hours that follow surgery but this usually settles spontaneously.

You are likely to notice much clearer vision within 24 hours of the surgery with the final visual outcome apparent by 3-4 weeks.

A detailed discussion of the pontential risks and complications will occur during your ciinical appointment
