DRY EYE TREATMENT – IPL
Around 50% of evaporative dry eye cases are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), whereby certain factors disrupt the usual functioning of these glands.
As a result, less oil is present on the eye’s surface and the tear film is unstable and evaporates more rapidly leaving a dry eye. IPL has been recently introduced to ophthalmology as a safe and effective treatment for evaporative dry eye as it is found to significantly improve tear quality and relieve associated symptoms.
Many patients opt for lubricating eye drops to maintain a moist surface of the eyes, and prevent dry eyes. We perform our dry eye treatment using the M22 laser by Lumenis – a leading manufacturer of energy-based medical solutions for the aesthetic and ophthalmology industries.
Eye protectors will be placed over the eyes before applying a cooling gel. Intense pulses of light are then delivered to the eyes by placement of a handheld device. The light will turn to heat when absorbed by the oxyhaemoglobin which will melt the substances that are causing a blockage in the glands – the underlying cause of MGD. By gently massaging the eyelids after applying IPL any excess oil is expressed and the natural production of oil is stimulated.
Mr Maycock may recommend up to 4, monthly treatments to ensure full functioning of the meibomian glands has been restored.

Who is suitable for this treatment?
Before treatment you will need to have a consultation with Mr Maycock so he can determine if your dry eyes are caused by MGD (meibomian gland dysfunction), and if IPL is the right procedure to resolve the issue.
Is this treatment safe?
Using IPL to treat evaporative dry eye is a safe treatment that restores the normal function of the glands. Unlike other treatments (such as eye drops), IPL will address the underlying cause of this concern (primarily MGD) rather than the symptoms. Repeating the treatment may be required in the future.
Will it hurt?
IPL treatments are usually pain-free and do not cause any trauma to the skin and tissues.
When can I expect the final result?
Noticeable results are often experienced after the first or second treatment (within 1 or 2 months), with the full outcome apparent after the final session in your recommended course. Maintaining fully functioning meibomian glands may require regular treatments, advised every 9-12 months.
Are there any side effects or risks?
Research to date shows there are no reports of serious complications following dry eye treatment using IPL. Common side effects include slight swelling, itching and redness around the eyes which will be temporary.
